No. 3 and a Word of Advice (as Promised)

Thanks for tuning in again. As promised here’s assignment No. 3 and a word of advice on helping your kids with their writing awesomeness. I remind you however that my advice comes with no guarantees. There’s a high probability that my kids are responsible for their own awesomeness… ;)

So, No. 3 was an assignment for grade ten English. We’d been studying The Lady or the Tiger by Frank Stockton. It’s a great short story set in some barbaric fantasy world where justice is left to fate. In the story a commoner is tried for the crime of loving a princess. At his “trial” his fate (and guilt or innocence) is determined by two doors. Behind one door is a maiden and behind the other is a tiger. If the guy chooses the maiden they are married on the spot. If he chooses the tiger, well I think you can guess the logical consequences of that…

Anyway, the princess discovers who the maiden is and which door she’s behind. Now the maiden is a rival of the princess and the princess has a bit of a jealous streak to boot. Obviously she’s not too thrilled with either door. But she’s promised to signal her lover which door to choose and finds herself pondering whether she’d prefer her lover dead or married.

The catch is that the story ends just as the guy opens the door. And we, the readers, never get to know what’s behind the door.

Okay, back to me. For some reason I was away from school on the day our book report was assigned. It was a straight-up book report we were given but for some reason I thought we had to write our own ending to the story so that’s what I did.

I don’t remember how my ending went except that I really tried to capture the style of Mr. Stockton, the author. Aside from mimicking his style I figured I’d leave the reader hanging at the end as well.

There were some flaws in my assignment (not the least of which was doing the assignment wrong). For one I kept referring to a lion instead of a tiger. Despite the story’s imperfections I ended up getting the highest mark in the class. Guess I had a pretty understanding teacher –and maybe a really good reason for missing class the day the assignment was handed out?

I wish I could remember my teacher’s name because I’d love to thank him. If he’d failed me on that assignment I might not be writing today (or at least not writing with a whole lot of confidence). Lucky for Miss Emily and me he was an “outside the box” kinda guy.

So, encourage your kids to keep writing. When they’re younger, let them use “inspiration” from other sources. Encourage them to try on others’ writing styles –and remember that it’s okay for them to “write outside the lines” of your expectations. They just may surprise you with their awesomeness! :)

Our Crazy Animals!

We very happily live on a farm in Creston, BC. The other day the sun was shining and  so Micheline’s daughter, Hannah, decided to head outside for some relaxing quiet time. The following is what she wrote about her little adventure outside and it also includes some pics of our crazy farm animals – it was so cute we had to share! :)

It was such a nice day out! And since I had planned on writing out the lyrics of one of my favourite songs I thought, ‘Might as well go outside and hang out in the sun and relax.’

I got out there with my pen, paper and iPod, I sat down in the grass not too far from my ponies. The kittens were playing underneath one of the blue pine trees and Nala – our dog – was hanging out as well.

I began to write the lyrics of the song and my pony, Bandit, decided to come and say hi. He was nibbling grass, creeping slowly closer and closer, (He thinks he’s pretty sneaky. :D ) I thought nothing of if until he shoved my shoe out of the way to get the grass underneath! He kept shoving either my shoe or my knee or my hand. Eventually I pushed his nose away and kept writing.

Then the kittens decided to join, they came up and rubbed all over me and one jumped onto my lap and was purring in my ear and rubbing on my arms as I tried to write!

And of course who should show up next but Nala!!! She sat down beside me and was licking my hand. So I stopped writing and sat there for a minute petting the dog, petting the kittens. And occasionally shoving Bandit out of the way, thinking, ‘Yeah. This is real relaxing.’

After a bit I began to write again. This time I tried to ignore the animals. One of the kittens was attacking my headphones, one was sitting on my lap and Bandit…well he stole my pen. I wasn’t too happy with him for that.

Sigh…but those are our crazy animals! They just love you to death!!

“Trew” Appreciation

In a recent blog I admitted that I can’t sing. My lack of talent is sadly, directly proportionate to my love of music.  In addition to enjoying a variety of musical genres I’m also a huge fan of Canadian bands.

At the top of my list of exceptional Canadian (well, in this case any) talent is The Trews. They’re touring this month and after a few schedule manipulations I got to see them perform at Flames Central in Calgary on March 5th. I convinced my sister and three other girlfriends to join me but aside from my girlfriend, Sheila, no one else really knew who these guys were.

Everyone loved the concert and much to their surprise knew all but three or four songs. You see, that’s the thing about The Trews –they’re so talented and so versatile that people love their music –they just don’t always know it’s The Trews music that they’re loving.

Now you’re probably thinking, “Great, but what does this have to do with anything? This is a family-oriented blog, isn’t it?”

Well these guys are so awesome that in November 2010 after playing Cranbrook’s Key City Theatre they took time out of their crazy touring schedule to crash my children’s Remembrance Day assembly at TM Roberts Elementary School and sing Highway of Heroes with close to 300 hysterically screaming kids –who, by the way, are cool enough to actually know who these guys are.

Check it out on you tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Idr-aNDgEY I swear it’ll bring a lump to your throat…

Our school Board wrote a letter thanking the band. At the concert in Calgary, Keyboardist Jeff Heisholt came out after the show and I my sister tapped him on the shoulder and said, “My sister wants to talk to you.” (How utterly embarrassing!!!)

He was so gracious that I didn’t feel like a total dork as I explained who I was and reiterated our thanks to him for what he and the band did for our kids. AND he said singing with the kids was the highlight of that tour for him. How sweet!! I have to admit that my mom-crush on these guys is now officially official…

If you like good music (and awesome lyrics) check these guys out. They deserve to be recognized as talented artists –and really decent guys. You won’t be disappointed. :)

Taking the Cat for a Walk?

The forest on the back of our property has a trail that loops around and follows the fence line. This morning Shane, myself, Hannah and Hunter went for a walk in the forest. Obviously, our dogs LOVE to go for a walk but the funny thing is that one of our cats does as well… actually Ogden (that’s his name) is still a growing kitten but he goes with us for the entire walk!!! We are wondering if he is really a puppy at heart! :D

He’s just about as cute as Miss Emily! ;)

Front and Back Cover

So I’m continuing to work on ideas… these are the beginning stages so things are bound to change but I still wanted to share! This is an addition to yesterday’s post – an idea for front and back cover together… of course, like the first book, the mice are my favourite part!!! ;)
