Description

“Perhaps the present, no matter how messy, is the perfect time to live.”

Family is not always blood, and home is where the heart is. It took Dain Alloway years to understand these foundational truths, and now as captain of The Maiden, surrounded by the found family he loves, Dain sets out to end a centuries old genocide and hopefully stop an oncoming war. But, when the girl he loves is torn from his arms, Dain might be forced to choose between saving just her, or saving them all.

This YA, fantasy adventure is chalk full of action filled scenes set upon the high seas. You’ll rejoin a loveable cast of characters from the first book, The Maiden Ship, and meet some nasty pirates and alluring mermaids along the way.

  1. I really loved the second book! ****
I was really struggling with the pandamic, but this book was amazing to get my mind of everything going on around me. First I want to say how amazing and beautiful the cover is and how talented the author is. It’s very eyecathing and I can’t wait until my Faecrate editions will arrive <3
The story was full of action and plot twists and I couldn't put the book down. The plot was very well constructed. The characters got depth and showed growth. I also want to say how much I liked the writing style of the author.

Thank you Micheline for the early copy! I can't wait to read more books from you <3

  2. This is so much fun! The characters are loveable and the writing is intelligent and engaging. Good pacing to the story, it is very entertaining. I enjoyed this one very much!

  3. I’m honored to have had the opportunity to read an ARC of this story. Being an ARC reader definitely has its perks. But the only downside to it is having to keep my review super vague and not being able to gush over everything that I loved about this book! Because this book deserves all the love and endless gushing, but I suppose I can do that when it’s out in February. 😉

So, for starters, this book was even better than its predecessor The Maiden Ship. There’s far more action and tons more use of magic as our main characters grow into their powers and learning the full extent of their abilities. Along with a deeper glimpse inside the magic world, I was also introduced to several new characters—including a few new enemies, one of which was vaguely introduced in the first book. And during these meetings our main characters are forced to undergo substantial character growth. Especially Dain! I appreciate the rate he matured in this book so much, makes me respect him even more as a leader and as a love interest to our girl Sable.

I’m so excited to see how everything gets resolved in the third and final book to this series. The ending left me so emotional, dare I say there’s one couple I may love just a smidge more than Dain and Sable?!? I can’t wait to see more of them in the final book!!

  4. This book got 5 * btw – just in case you´re wondering 😉
    So …
What can I say other than: the author got even better!
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, but you could tell it was her first publication. With this one however you could really see, that her writing improved by a long shot. It was even more descriptive and compelling so I could not put the book down once I had started it. Part of it was the writing and the other half was due to the story, that just pulled me in and wouldn’t let me go. Whilst I was reading I laughed, felt the love and even cried a little. All the characters are fleshed out very well and the story definitely picked up in comparison to the 1st book. I cannot wait to see where this is all going! So if you enjoyed the first book you cannot miss this one! 🙂 no complaints here – none whatsoever 🙂

  5. I was given an ARC of this for an honest review.
This series is so well written. I love the new characters. And getting to revisit old ones. I can’t wait to see what the next book brings.

  6. I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this magical sea bound story. It picks up not too long after the first one ended and gets right into the adventure and struggles that are expected to happen in the journey of the characters. I love that we get introduced to some new characters, most of which, are to be adored and added to this chosen family. I’m definitely itching to find out what is next to come in this battle of good vs evil. (4 and a half stars)

  7. AN ADVENTURE.

Thank you to the author for an eARC in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own!

Oh wow, I didn’t realize how much I missed these characters! This is one of my favorite groups of friends/found family. Everyone has such personality and make me so happy when I read it. I love the new members added in (except for Dain’s Mom, definitely curious if she gets a redemption arc) and what they brought to the story.

It was nice to see a little separation between Dain and Sable to allow for some personal growth. BUT, I did miss the romance a bit. I wanted more between them. Gratefully, the ending gave into that so I’m excited for book three and what it will hold. I’m curious about where the sub-plot with Dain is going with his siren friend. I’m not sure I’m into it, though I’m trying to keep an open mind.

There was action and mystery happening all over. I love that we finally got to meet some characters discussed in The Maiden Ship and that they got a little bit of the spotlight. The brother/sister duo was interesting too. I just enjoyed meeting so many new people!

The mythology and magic system are inventive and easy to follow. There’s not much information on how it all works, yet I don’t find that distracting from the story. I love how this is set-up on the high seas. I love a good book out on the ocean. Adding in the different locations they went to really made for a well rounded novel.

    Overall audience notes:
    – Fantasy
    – Language: very little
    – Romance: kisses, hinted closed door scenes
    – Violence: physical, magical, kidnapping

  8. I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Lion of the Sea begins with an attack on The Maiden, where Sable is taken. She is taken to a man who is intent on using her as the key to taking over all of the four kingdoms. Meanwhile, Dain is determined to do anything save Sable. In the process he discovers a way to save the four kingdoms.

I enjoyed returning and reuniting with the characters, Dain and Sable especially. I loved the character growth. Dain and Sable’s relationship took a step forward that was nice to see, and needed. My favorite pairing may be Mo and Lydia now though. They are just too darn cute.

New characters are added. There’s a mermaid. And pirates. Elden becomes more then just a story. All add to the story and the world masterfully. I really like them. I hope to see more of Hannon again.

The world building is expanded in this book. The magic system gets explained a bit more. There are still mysteries that need cleared up but this is the middle book so everything should be wrapped up in the third book.

If you haven’t read The Maiden Ship, the first book in this trilogy, go do that, then come read The Lion of the Sea. This series is a can’t miss. I will be eagerly awaiting the next book.

  9. Ah, this book was just as amazing as the first! This is true action adventure at its best. Our characters go on quite the journey taking us to new places and bringing new members to the cast (one in particular just made my heart squeal to finally meet). I highly recommend this for lovers of pure, good times. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

  10. irst of all I want to thank Micheline (aka @whimsicalillustration) for the opportunity of reading this book earlier by sending me an eARC.
Now, let’s get to the book.

The Lion of the Sea is the second book in The Maiden Ship series by Micheline Ryckman and it is a YA fantasy that is releasing today (February 7th, 2021) by Whimsical Publishing.

Last year in December I read The Maiden Ship and it went straight to my favourites .

As was with the first one, this book is full of action and lovely characters. We rejoined our characters from the first book and also met some new ones, who drive the plot even further. I love Micheline’s writing, it’s whimsical and it can transport me to the setting with no difficulties. The story picks right where it ended in The Maiden Ship and continues to be full of action. We see our characters grow and make decisions that affect everyone.
The book had everything. Happy and sad moments and of course funny ones. The Lion of the Sea doesn’t end in a cliffhanger as The Maiden Ship did but you still want to know what is going to happen with our characters. I am eager to find out how Dain & Sable’s story goes on as well as the reunion of a certain couple.

    Rating: 4 Stars

  11. What to say about this book….I am not one for big reviews , I don’t like analytic reviews so I will go with what I liked and why whitout analysing the story.
I am so gratfull to have been able to get an advance reader copy of this book, I was one of my most anticipated for 2021 and i was able to read it in 2020!!! and it have make my year a bit better.
I was worry to not love this book as much as I loved the maiden ship, but I had nothing to worry about, this book is gorgeous. For starters is easy to read, and beautifully written, the world descriptions and mythology  are beautiful. And there are MERMAIDS!!!! I love mermaids, and I fell in love with Hannon pretty quickly and I hope to see more of her in the final book of this trilogy.
But by far my favourite part of this book is how the characters minds function, every thought and feeling so very nicely explained,  the empathy shown, how the characters react what they feel and how they change trhough the story is very rich and for me the most enjoyable part of the book, as I find difficult to find books where this feels natural and close to home.
I am not completly sure to have explain well what I want to mean, but I hope you all understand me.
It is the perfect second book, full of adventure and twists, love in all its forms. rich characters you will instantly love even when you really don’t know if they are heroes or villains.

  12. 5 Stars!! Action packed from the start and such an exciting read! I didn’t expect to enjoy this book so much only because the first book’s pace was slower (but also a great read, however, it needed to set the stage and provide character development). The storyline flowed very well and there were plot twists I was not expecting. I like that both Dain and Sable alternate in sharing the lead, giving insight to both sides of the story. We are also introduced to more types of characters such as mermaids (or sirens as they’re called in the book), witches and pirates. Micheline has created a vast and wondrous world and I can’t wait to explore it more with the final book in the trilogy. The story is left on a bit of a cliffhanger, but I finished it feeling satisfied enough to be able to wait it out, knowing the third is still in the works.

Thank you to Micheline for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend this series!

  13. Thank you Micheline for an eARC! This novel was just as great as its predecessor. It introduced new characters, locations, and aspects of the magic both the characters and we readers are coming to learn about. It’s darker than The Maiden Ship, but leaves off on a hopeful note. Love drives this story, that of the characters and Micheline’s for this story. I can’t wait until the third book because *shakes fist* Micheline how could you leave it at a cliffhanger that is both happy and stressful?!

  14. First off, if you haven’t read The Maiden Ship yet, stop here and go do it! Second, I am so thankful Micheline gave me an ARC to review so I didn’t have to wait to see what my boi Casper was up too. And of course Dain and Sable….😏 This was a 5⭐️ for me and I’m already restless for the third book.

There are so many things I loved about this book. You can really see how much the author has grown from her debut novel. 👏🏼 The story picks up seamlessly from the first and the action doesn’t stop until the end. The magic and history is explained more which gives the reader a better understanding of what’s going on. We get a few new characters that I LOVE but don’t want to talk much about in case it’s a bit spoilery for you! 🧜🏽‍♀️
I love the found family vibes of the rag tag cast so much. That seems to be the undercurrent of This series and I’m here for it because the author does it beautifully.

Also, a fair bit of warning, the book will leave you wanting more!

  15. Wow oh wow! I’ve been waiting for this sequel. Patiently (or maybe not so patiently). Sometimes a sequel falls flat, this one DID NOT! I am still enthralled by the world created by Ryckman. Not only did she craft a magic system built in centuries of the world’s mythology, she also has created characters that will capture your heart. Dain and Sable are definitely an OTP that you need to meet. While we continue to watch their relationship grow, I was quite pleased to see each character striking out and making their individual journeys in their own personal growth as well.

If you love books steeped in magic while sailing the high seas encountering creatures of the deep, unruly pirates and a villain you love to hate, Ryckman has delivered a romantic package tied up in a bow for you. #isthisakissingbook? It most definitely is so be sure to snag The Maiden Ship so you can fall in love with this sequel too!

  16. I really enjoyed this sequel to The Maiden Ship! There was a variety of interpersonal relationships examined throughout the book, and I loved how everything flowed, none of it felt forced at all. Found family is very prevalent in all aspects of this book, especially with the main character Dain. Dain’s growth throughout the book illustrates how he comes to terms with his identity, not just in his family, but also his greater purpose. I really enjoyed this magic system and how much more we learn about the inner workings of especially Dain’s magic. I hope that in the next book we will learn more about Idris and Leara An’s powers! I love how the Dernamn came into play, it was such a good twist! I will just say, I like pink a lot more now. I also love the legend of the world’s founding, and I want to know even more!

  17. The Lion of the Sea is another amazing book and I loved reading every bit of it!! After the first few chapters, I was completely hooked again. The growing relationships between Dain and Sable were fun to see and the journeys they experienced were intense and an absolute treat to read! The twists and turns with the unexpected allies and new enemies made for a real surprise to each turn of the page. The lore for the mythology regarding the gods and the creation of their world was exciting to learn!! I wholeheartedly love the ending to The Lion of the Sea and I look forward to reading the next installment in the series when it’s released!!

Another 10/10 stars, I love this amazing book!!
