We’ve got quite a bit coming up, so sit down and buckle up:

  • Don’t forget Narnia releases in two days on Tuesday, March 17th. This is the LAST CALL to get sprayed edges. Order while you still can!
  • You can also still preorder Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Grimms’ Fairy Tales with sprayed edges until their respective release dates!
  • Whimsical staff is going on spring break, so we’ll be out of office on March 18-29th. We’ll miss you, but we’ll come back well-rested and more excited than ever to get you some gorgeous books!
  • ANDDD do you like free books? Of course you do! We still have the opportunity for you to ARC read Hayley Reese Chow’s upcoming “Fangs, Fate, and Mondays”!

Once these are gone, they’re gone, so if you’ve been pondering snagging some, take this as a sign from Aslan to get yours now!


Speaking of classics… we’re so excited about our rapidly growing classics collection. We currently have preorder campaigns running for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Grimm’s Fairytales as well. Take a peek below! We’re still not over how utterly gorgeous these turned out!

And of course, we can’t forget about our Jane Austen editions. They look gorgeous on a shelf together. It’s the same stories you love, repackaged with gorgeous human-made art! These are all available for purchase now! No wait needed.

As a small press, hearing from you all is some of the biggest motivation we can receive to keep us going. We can’t wait to see all these beautiful books in your hands!

The weather is beginning to warm up (or at least where this newsletter is being written in California, and published in Creston). Yay for more sun and the return of iced drinks and summer reads. But who are we kidding? We’ve been reading “summer reads” year-round. 😜

We’ve got quite a bit coming up, so sit down and buckle up:

What Makes A Loveable Side Character? And Why They’re So Important. Sincerely, A Small Press

We’ve all fallen in love with a side character at least once. It’s like a canon event for all readers (and writers) out there! And since we have an upcoming collection focused on fan favorite side characters (if you’re new here, hello! We’re your new favorite small press!), we thought it would be the perfect time to talk about them!

As a small press, we spend a lot of time reading and considering manuscripts. We read so many amazing books and it can be a hard decision to pick one to publish. However, something that always makes a story a winner, whether you’re a publisher or a reader, is when you’re pulled in and you simply forget you’re reading the story. Immersion is a huge reason why we read books in the first place! Stories, on top of being thoughtful commentaries and lyrical masterpieces, are also escapes. An effective story can convince a reader of the world they’ve stepped into. It’s why having a main character a reader is willing to follow is important and is also what makes side characters essential.

Think of your regular day-to-day life: You’re not the only person occupying the world around you. You have your eccentric family members, awkward roommates, loving friends, and passionate characters. There are people around you everywhere! They make the world around you lived in and feel more interesting. If a main character was just wandering around alone, the story would probably be pretty boring, don’t you think?

A good side character thinks they’re the main character. Much like in real life, everyone is the main character in their own life! If the side character is clearly there just to be a side character, they won’t give us any new perspective on the story worth latching onto. Side characters make us more interested in our main characters and their dynamics help us learn more about the hero we’re following and the world we’re setting out to save (or destroy).

A side character could be opposing the main character who challenges their beliefs, or a loyal friend, who’s great sense of humor and unbridled confidence inspires the main character. A great side character can make an even better main character! What would Percy Jackson be without Annabeth and Grover?

That’s why amazing side characters are in nearly every one of our books… They truly make the fictional world go round.
