: Author – Trina Ayling
Trina lives in Cranbrook, BC with her husband and two boys. She is presently a trustee for School District 5. Miss Emily Goes to Bat is the first in a series of books that Trina is writing for Whimsical Publishing with the theme that every child is unique and special in his or her own way.

: Illustrator – Micheline Ryckman
Micheline Ryckman lives in Creston, BC with her husband and two children. Micheline has a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts, is co-owner of Whimsical Publishing and is an accomplished artist in multiple mediums. Micheline has illustrated Miss Emily Goes to Bat and co-illustrated Whimsical’s World of Dragons and Whimsical’s World of Horses.

Hayden Wolf resided in Toronto, ON with his wife. Hayden balances an extensive background in art and design, along with his love for film and photography. Summer Pastimes

HEY – it’s me, Hannah, I’m back! (That’s me pictured above with a little friend and one of my ponies.) If you have never seen my previous posts please check them out by clicking here >>> How to Draw a Dragon & Our Crazy Animals!

I did it! I finished grade 8 (and part of grade 9 actually… there are some perks to home schooling like; going at your own speed 🙂 ). I’m so happy school is finished and that I am on summer holidays! HOORAY!!! What do you do during the summer – when there’s no school to distract you?

Playing video games is all very well, but in the summer??? No, I think summertime is for getting outside for a walk, going for a bike ride, jumping on the trampoline with the sprinkler underneath or… you could simply drop a water balloon on a friend when they aren’t paying attention! 😉 The possibilities are endless!

Summer pastimes may vary, but in my opinion it is the best season!
For two reasons;
1: No school!! :}
2: and well…. NOOOOOO SCHOOL!!! (Hee hee! 😉 )

So what do I do during the summer?

Well… usually I go camping with my family at some point but because we live on a farm far away from downtown and a little distanced from most friends then one needs to get creative; I can train the pigs, play with the chickens, give the horses a bath, go for a walk with the dog, or give the barn cats some attention.

Mrs.Norris_small — This is one of our newest barn kitties – her name is ‘Mrs. Norris’.
(I know, a very grown-up name for such a little girl!)

Eragon_small — This is our other newbie – his name is ‘Eragon’.

I really like to listen to music and hang out with the animals – sometimes daydreaming, sometimes drawing, or thinking up new ideas for a story. (I actually find that a farm also has its own type of music too: the horses are the beat, walking along, the chickens are the guitar chords, clucking and crowing while the dog is a singer barking at the cats. 😉 ) You could ride in the wood-shed wagon down a hill and have it tip with you still in it and fall – hands and knees – into a puddle. Or you could carry a hen around and see if she eats more grasshoppers than your brother’s hen. You could jump into the horses’ water trough when you’re hot and run – barefoot – around their pen, jumping, playing, rolling in the dirt and then getting back into the water… who knows?! (Just so ya know – these are all based on VERY real experiences! 🙂 )

She is so tame that she’ll eat out of my hand and I can carry her around with me anywhere. 🙂

KCDC Grand Opening! And a NEW painting!

On June 15th the Kootenay Child Development Center held it’s grand opening! Although I didn’t get the chance to be there in person I was there supporting it in spirit. I totally believe this place is an indispensable addition to the East Kootenays – it is going to be a such blessing to families and children around the region. My partner, Trina, did attend the grand opening with her son, Thom. She admitted that Thom had so much fun eating goodies, playing in the bouncy tent and doing projects at the craft table that they were actually some of the last people to leave – ha ha! Trina also told me that approximately 50 folks (in her estimate) attended the opening including Cranbrook’s mayor, Wayne Stetski, the Cranbrook city council members, Sharon Cross and Diana J. Scott. When I asked Trina what she thought about everything afterwards she said, “It was amazing to actually see this center come to fruition as I have been watching these dedicated women work so hard for the last few years.”

The women that Trina is referring to are Patricia Whalen, Gail Brown and Gwen Noble. Although I’m sure many folks were involved in making this center a reality I understand that these women have been the front runners. (Great job ladies!!! 🙂 )

So you still might be wondering where exactly do I come into all this and what does my newest painting have to do with it? Well, Gail Brown is actually retiring soon and as a memento of all her efforts and dedication I was commissioned to do a painting in her honour that will hang in the center. The painting is titled, ‘Unspeakable Joy’ and it was presented to Gail at the opening. It was a serious privilege to do this piece and my heart is that it reflects the untainted joy that we see daily in our children.
